Okay.. so I always forget about my live journal account. ::sigh::
At least I have something exciting to share now. LOL
The very first episode of the Stargate SG1 Virtual Season 9 is now available!
As cute as Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell may be...he's not Jack. If you aren't ready to let go of Jack O'Neill just yet, then VS9 is the place to visit.
Episode 1"Points of Departure" is a team effort by SGC Gategirl and Dinky that kicks of the season with a generous helping of angst, drama, action, adventure, and hopefully a few surprises!
You can find the first episode on the VS9 site at
http://www.vs9.jackfic.com
Be sure to check out the artwork and spoilers for next week's ep!
We hope you enjoy the Virtual Season 9!

Morning Edition - National Public Radio |

After being out of the classroom as a school-based teacher coach for the past five years, I interviewed yesterday for a third grade position at a new school and got the job!
I love being a coach and being involved in the bigger picture at my school but I truly think it is time to re-focus. Besides, by going back in the classroom I have the option of trying to get National Board Certification which means an extra $10,000.00 per year for the next 10 years! I can't even go through the certification process if I'm out of the classroom.
The school I'm going to has only been open two years - it's a brand new building (a real treat for me because I've only worked in older schools) and it's less than 10 minutes from the house I'm trying to buy!
On the downside, I was speaking with one of the teachers I work with and her kids caught on to the fact that I won't be returning next year. The wanted to know why I didn't just go into a classroom at my current school. ::sniff:: I explained that I was trying to buy a house and the new school will be much closer for me.
There's no point in trying to hide it from them. To me, that would be worse for our kids.
I'm excited about the change! I think I'd better start saving my money however. All that money I've saved over the past five years by NOT having to buy stuff for a group of kids will be just a memory. LOL

Hooray!
Had the home inspection done today and there was nothing majorly wrong with the place. Some minor repairs here and there and the hot water heater is kinda ancient (meaning it might take a dump in the next few years) but nothing to keep me from handing over the escrow check!
That's ONE positive thing about this week. I'd like to block out pretty much everything else that has happened.
Now I get to wait on the mortgage company to get all its ducks in row.
We're shooting for an early April closing date.

Well, some folks at the Kawoosh music vid bboard (::waves at looking4tarzan::)reminded me that I haven't updated this thing in ages and today happened to be a big day for me so...
I created a new icon to celebrate part of my day...
but I'll save the good news for last.
Not that anybody is interested, it looks like my principal is making a career move from elementary to high school. This was not unexpected but the fact that he may be making this move on the 31st of this month was somewhat suprising to us all. I've worked with him for six years at two different schools and while I wish him the best I'm very sorry to lose him as a boss.
So I got this news confirmed first thing this morning and had to sit on it all day until the afternoon staff meeting when he told everyone else. It was very depressing. Plus the state tests are next week and tomorrow was SUPPOSED to be a planning day but we lost it so we could make up a hurricane day. Why do I live in Florida again?
Anyway, I'm sulking and depressed and I get back from lunch and I realize I missed a phone call on my cell.
It's my realtor and I get the news that the owners of the house I'm interested in buying have accepted my offer and home inspections can start next week! Woooohooo! So, while getting a new principal next year and/or changing schools/jobs is still not the greatest thing in the world, I'm EXTREMELY happy at the prospect of moving from my little tiny one bedroom house to a nice three bedroom only about 10 minutes from where I am now.
( Here are some pics if you feel motivated to click. )
Now, I'm just crossing my fingers hoping it passes all the inspections and nothing drastic happens in the next month.
So that's my day.
It only takes major life changing events to get me to update my lj... apparently. LOL

| New Vid ~ "Were You Born an Asshole?" |
[26 Jun 2004|02:15pm] |
I must be making up for lost vidding time because I have another vid to share already! This one is "Were You Born an Asshole" by Jimmy Buffett and features the politician we all love to hate - Robert Kinsey. You know Jack isn't one to hide his true feelings for the man and this seemed like the perfect song to let him vent a bit. I should say that Ronnie Cox is a fine actor and I'm sure he is a perfectly pleasant person in real life. His character, Kinsey, however is another story entirely. It's all in good fun and don't we all want to see Kinsey get what's coming to him one day anyway? By the way, if you are offended by the word in the vid title, don't bother downloading the file because you'll hear that particular word a lot. You can find the vid here: http://www.hoodatlair.com/musicvids.htm Scroll down or click on the new vid link at the top of the page. Enjoy! Hoodat Whatzit

This time it's a mini-vacation not work. Wooohoooo!
I'm escaping for a mini-camping trip and a visit with the parentals and some other family.
My cats are going to disown me. They hate being locked in and the female is terrified of my neighbors... even though they are are coming over to feed them every day.
Wow... no school or work to worry about for a few days! Whatever will I do with myself?

Chalk this one up to one of those "It seemed like a good idea at the time!" ideas.
A few months back I decided I wanted to include a fanzine section on the Beta Site. Considering I've never even held a zine in my hands this was a slightly ambitious undertaking for me.
Anyway... the end result is now up at
http://www.betasite.hoodatlair.com/fanzines.htm
It includes a FAQs (very basic) page, a page with some links to information on the history of fanzines, and a listing of fanzines presses that accept Stargate stories.
In the process of gathering the fanzine information I was left wondering what to do with the info about the fanzine cons that are out there (like Media*West for example) and I decided to do a Stargate and fanzine con page as well. Like most of my ideas it grew.
http://www.betasite.hoodatlair.com/conventions.htm
I ended up listing lots and lots and lots of cons related to Scifi, Fantasy, and more. Over a hundred! All of them listed by month and including a valid (verified yesterday) url to a website for more con info.
Enjoy!

Anybody reading this is sitting in front of the most powerful tool in the history of mankind.
Sure, there are more destructive tools out there... more technology designed to save a life, extend a life, or improve the quality of our lives. There are machines that can get us more places than we've ever been able to go and all that but for my money nothing beats being able to boot up my trusty PC and log onto the Internet.
All that information literally at your fingertips. All you have to do is be willing to look and have the ability to think for yourself as you sift through the "good" stuff and the not so good stuff.
Why why why why WHY I ask you would anybody who has spent more than a few weeks playing on the internet not have the capacity or willingness to spend 5 minutes on a search engine to find out facts that nearly any eight year old could dig up?
Is it laziness? True ignorance? What???
The internet allows you to connect to anyone anywhere anytime for crying out loud!
Is it really that hard to throw a few words in a search engine and do a little work???
It's ALL out there folks. Somewhere. The search is half the fun. You never know what you might find along the way. (hmm... sounds kind of Gumpish but that's the mood I'm in I guess)

Well, I'm off to Reno bright and early in the morning for a weeklong reading conference.
Yes, teachers from all over the place will be gathering together for a week of professional development in reading. Of course, every free moment will be spent in seminars, panels, and learning sessions. The casinos might as well shut the doors because we will all be way too busy for such trivial things. Booze and gambling is sooo not a temptation for the educators of today's youth. Not at all.
(That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)
Anyway.. I felt like the event deserved a new icon.

I've probably just had the busiest two weeks of my year.
Less than twenty instructional days left before our school lets out for the summer means we are in the normal end-of-year frenzy of field trips, talent show, science night, school carnival, return of major test scores, parent conferences... and on and on and on.
Plus, it's the end of the semester at my college. Two final exams in one week, a term paper, and all the paperwork that documents my instructional leader field experience practicum course.
I just spent all morning updating a business website for a family friend and I leave tomorrow for a three day training conference. I get to come back for three whole days and then I'm off to Reno, NV for the International Reading Association's annual conference which lasts a week!
So what else would I do with down time except make a new icon?

I should have been studying for a final exam... instead I spent the day wondering why I keep pissing people off and working on an update to the Beta Site.
Several new links have been added to the Web Tips page and I wrote an article called "Presentation is Key: Formatting Fic for the Web"
http://www.betasite.hoodatlair.com/webtips.htm
The site is constantly being updated but I decided to only bore folks with the major upates. Still, I hope you stop in from time to time to see what's new. The Beta Reader list has been growing by leaps and bounds!
I would also like to put out the call for contributors! If you have thoughts on an issue related to fan fic writing please feel free to submit an article to the site! I'd love to see another by-line or two.. or three.. or four or more... on the site.

I found this while doing research for fanzine information for the betasite. You can read the whole pamphlet here: http://www.fanac.org/fanzines/WhatIsSFF/index.html? By the way... there's a whole section on "flanguage" which is a real hoot to read. For example... female fans were known as "fannes" (fan-eees... get it?) Any good teacher knows that a student must practice new vocabulary in order for the word to truly become acquired knowledge so... Splrfsk, my fellow fen. This fanne must sign off and head for graduate class. Fout! I'd rather gafia and relax with a nice tall mug of xeno but, alas, such is not to be.
It's all X in the long run 'cause I'll graduate this summer and the weetong will just start pouring in. Holy Klono! Who am I kidding anyway?
Have fun everyone!

Okay, the charity organization that helps fund my school's after-school tutoring program decided it would be FUN to take all of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade tutoring students to a skating party today.
And of course yours truly was in charge of said tutoring program and was expected to attend as a chaperone.
Amazingly enough, yours truly had fond memories of junior high school and Saturday skate nights and decided she should show the kids that she wasn't always this OLD.
Now, my confidence did not extend to in-line skates. I requested the four on the floor old-fashioned style. I laced them up and took off... and was humbled. I didn't fall but the arm flailing and shaky legs was not part of my fond memories of younger days.
"Have it really been THAT long since I wore skates?" I wondered. I mean, I used to be a skating maniac! Backwards, forwards, speed skating... I did it all (back then).
After a few turns I took a break and got a soda (it was hot in there), grabbed a locker and stuffed my camera and wallet into it (gone was the idea that I would be able to skate and take pictures) and decided to try again.
I made it about halfway around and one of my wheels CAME OFF!
Umm.. HELLO??? No wonder I'd been having so much trouble before! LOL Amazingly enough I stayed upright as the wheel went one way and I went the other. I was very impressed with myself too!
I retrieved the wheel and hobbled off the rink clutching the wall and holding up the wheel to show every kid (and teacher) that passed me laughing and pointing to prove that it was NOT MY FAULT!
Wouldn't you know it? The old fashioned skates were all gone in my size. So I bucked up and tried the rollerblades! And did okay! Woohoooo!
The morale of the story is bring your own equipment (I think). It might be that 34 year olds have no business trying to keep up with 9 - 11 year olds but it was fun and SOME of the kids at least were impressed that I got out there and tried.
A certain boss man remained in his tennis shoes the entire time! Hmmph...

I took my laptop to work this morning and with a nail file I got the metal slide protector from the damaged floppy out of my disk drive in about 5 seconds. The disk drive seems to be just fine. I tried out several floppies in it both old and new and every one of them was fine. I guess I just picked the one dysfunctional floppy out of the box to save my presentation on yesterday.
I was still front and center in the staff photo but I've long since resigned myself to having to put up with that every year.
I got home around 4pm and slept like a rock for 4 hours. I feel much better now and was even inspired to create a new sleepy!Jack icon.
